Regular expressions are at the heart of several UNIX tools. The subjects covered in this book apply to vi, sed, awk, grep, and other utilities. It's worth reading more than once.

This book describes many aspects of the UNIX system and gives a good overview of the most important commands. Mr. Sobell updates this book from time to time, so it applies closely to the current standards.

If you work with text files, sed and awk can save you a lot of time. sed is a stream editor, awk is a programmable editor/report writer. Yes, they are both spelled with all lower case letters.

Learning the vi Editor (adv)
Good book if you are a vi beginner.
Sys Admin Magazine "The journal for UNIX systems administrators".  They try to be pretty much independent of specific operating systems, but do cover some things that are unique to a specific brand.  This magazine is not free, but is a must for administrators.  The web site is free and contains some content that is not in the paper edition.
Ultimate Guide to the VI and Ex Text Editors (adv) A must have second book on vi.  Good depth.  This book is so good that HP actually puts their name on it!  If you are a beginner who is just learning vi, start with "Learning the vi Editor".
vi Lovers' Home Page Love it or hate it, you NEED to be able to use it.
